According to notes made by Mattie [DAVIS] LUCAS (1869-1936), Nancy Jane DAVIS was the daughter of William DAVIS and his first wife, Mittie Calhoun PEYTON (Note: other sources list her as Mintie PEDEN - bjw). There is supposed to be a marriage record on file bearing date 30 Oct 1823, although Mrs. LUCAS' notes say 1824 in Jefferson Co., AL. Mittie died Nov 1837, presumably in Fayette Co., AL, after which William md/2 Margaret CHEEK.

The DAVIS and CHEEK families moved about 1846 to Red River Co., TX, where William died (thrown from a horse) in 1848 or 1849. William's widow and children from his second marriage appear on the 1850 US census of Red River County. The children from his first marriage had returned to Alabama. They were (according to Mrs. LUCAS):

1. Catherine White DAVIS (1826-1903), md. Isaac NORMAN.

2. James Robert DAVIS (1832-1891), md. Annie HENRY.

3. Nancy Jane DAVIS (see below).

4. John Peytin DAVIS (1836-1860), md. Mary WHITE.

Nancy Jane DAVIS was born 24 Mar 1834 in Fayette Co., AL; md. Benjamin L. NORTHAM, 07 Apr 1853. Children:

1. George William NORTHAM (1854-1879).

2. James E. NORTHAM (1855-?).

3. Thomas Peyton NORTHAM (1857-?).

4. Nancy Wilmoth NORTHAM (1858-1862).

5. Marvin Gaines NORTHAM (1860-1860).

6. Mittie Ann NORTHAM (1862-?); md. D.B. HAWKINS in? Winfield, Fayette Co., AL.

7. Benjamin Alexander NORTHAM (1864-?).

A grandson of Nancy J. NORTHAM, Lee NORTHAM, lived at Deport, TX (on the Lamar-Red River Co. line). Mrs. LUCAS indicates that some of her data came from Nancy (Mrs. B.L.) NORTHAM.

You will find additional DAVIS information at the following site:

http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/a/v/Gale-G-Davis/ODT1-0001.html

Some of this information conflicts with Mrs. LUCAS' data. Although I have found some errors in Mrs. LUCAS' notes, they are *generally* reliable. At the very least, they have provided valuable clues where none existed before.

BTW, I am not descended from this line. Margaret [CHEEK] DAVIS was a sister to my ancestor, Sarah McGill [CHEEK] BROOKS. My CHEEK data can be found here:

I hope this helps!
