Karen,

I just found your query. YES, the town of Fayette, AL in Fayette County, was once known as Fayetteville. Per an act of Alabama, Jan. 5, 1831, "To incorporate the town of Fayetteville, in the County of Fayette..." Hope this helps you. There is a book published by The Fayette County Historical Society, Dec. 1974, entitled "Looking Back Fayette County, Alabama, 1924-1974." A lot of early history is in this publication. There might be some copies left; if you will contact me, perhaps I can put you in touch with the right person. patdakin@mindspring.com
