Hey Bob, Firstly, Etowah County wasn't established until 1866. It was made up of parts of Marshall, Blount, St Clair, Calhoun (Benton), and Cherokee.

Summit is in Blount County and PROBABLY always has been. The maps I have are county lines by decade, i.e. 1850, 1860, etc.

The area of Summit was right on the Marshall, Blount County line in 1850 and definately in Blount County from 1860 on. From what I have, it has never been in what became Etowah by several miles and not even close to Cherokee.

On a present day map, find the junction of US Highways 231 and 278. Summit is about 3 to 4 miles North of that junction on Hwy 231. The Summit community still exists.

To find your Civil War veterans, Go to the National Park Service webpage and surf around. They have a searchable database of Civil War Veterans that is pretty awesome. You don't have to have the exact unit or name and they can be Yankee or Reb. You should be able to get to the NPS by typing in nps.gov. If that doesn't do it, let me know and I'll see if I get you further.
