Etowah County was originally called Baine County after Col. D.W. Baine and was formed in March of 1867 from 6 counties: Cherokee, St. Clair, Marshall, Blount, Calhoun, and Dekalb. Baine County was later renamed Etowah County on 1 December 1868.
