Ann_looked up the 1830 Census, found several James Bruces but none in DeKalb, AL. Here are the one that were listed in the area. Marion, TN-11 white people; Lincoln, TN - 9; DeKalb, GA -5; Greene, GA - 8; Bledsoe, TN - 7; Habersham, GA - 6. Like the 1940 census- it only lists the husband's name or head of household and then lists only the number of people in age ranges. There was not a Murphy either. Hope this helps, if not I can look some more if you have more facts. You might want to use my direct email to me.
