If you still have access to Ancestry, could you look for Murphy Bruces's parents, James Bruce or Sarah Bruce in Dekalb county, AL in 1830? They were there in 1840, listed under Memphley Bruce with wife and child, who would have been Mary Ann, age 1 and living next door to his mother, Sarah.
