Hi Judy, Nothing ventured....nothing gained, so here goes!

My maternal Grandmother was a Johnson....born in Jackson County in 1910. Her Father was William Alexander (W.A.) Johnson, born in Alabama in 1879. W.A.'s father was Adam Johnson, born in ARKANSAS in 1850 to an Unknown Johnson and Charlsey Amanda Southerland who was born in 1827, not known where. Charlsey Southerland (2nd husband was a Talley), Adam Johnson & W.A. Johnson are all buried at Haigwood Cemetery in Jackson County, Alabama, which is a few miles from the Dekalb County line. Adam Johnson named one of his other sons Rubin C. (how it is spelled on his stone) who is also buried at Haigwood along with Adam's other four children.

From what I have been told, Charlsey Southerland was at least half Cherokee. I suspect that she went west as a child when the Cherokee were forced to move around 1838, married unknown Johnson and had two kids by him, Adam & a James, before something happened to unknown and then she returned to North Alabama.

I hope some of this might ring a bell with you. I have the bodies from Adam down and would love to find out who unknown is! Thanks, Rick
