Mattie (Martha Virginia) was the daughter of Rev James P. SMITH & Elizabeth [unk] who married abt 1869 probably in Cherokee Co, Alabama where he was living with his parents in 1850-60.

With a lot of help, we've learned a little more about Manson, Mattie, and their 6 children............
NUNNELLEY, SMITH, PORTERFIELD, BROWN, SPEIGHTS, FORD
(1) Pearl [Nunnelley] died unmarried 08 Mar 1910 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co Ala and is buried in Albertville, Marshall Co, Ala at an unknown cemetery.
(2) Sarah [Nunnelley] married Martin N. BROWN 16 Feb 1911 in Jefferson Co Al. Last found living 1920 in Duval Co Fla with no chn.
(3) Carrie [Nunnelley] married Arthur Thomas SPEIGHTS on 08 May 1913 in Jefferson Co Al. Last found living at 820 8th Court So, Birmingham, Jefferson Co Al with no known chn. Arthur died 17 Aug 1949 in Union Co Fla.
(4) Clara [Nunnelley] married Clarence L. PORTERFIELD by 1919.

They apparently separated or divorced between 1925 & 1929 as they are last found living together 1925 at 1500½ N. 25th in Birmingham , Ala.
In 1929, CLARA is found living with her parents at 518 5th Ave, Birmingham , Ala

*1941* the last record of Clara found in the Birmingham, Al city directory "Porterfield, Clara N, Mrs, 101 Lakeshore Apts, Birmingham". Chn unknown, if any.
*1952* the last record of Clarence is at Evergreen Cemetery, Ocean Springs, Jackson Co, Ms "Clarence L. Porterfield 10-29-1889 to 9-15-1952" He died in Mobile, Alabama.
(5) Per his death certificate & the 1930 census, son William Powell Nunneley married Louise [FORD] 1925-6

Powell & Louise are last found in the Birmingham, Al city directory in 1941 "Nunnelley, Wm. P (Louise) installer Western Union, 1125 24th N". Other records show that he also lived in Chicago and Georgia. He died in Sarasota Co Fla, 26 Oct 1970. Only known child is Clara b 1929 NC.
(6) Son Carl Leroy Nunnelley was b 29 Oct 1894 in Gadsden, Etowah Co, Ala. He was living with his parents 1900 & 1910.

He apparently 1st married an unknown lady between Oct 1920 - Oct 1921 per the next census but she was not living with him and it is unknown if he had any chn by this marriage.

In the late 1940's, he 2nd married Elizabeth Joan [McConville] and had 2 daughters who are now living. He & Elizabeth divorced. Carl died 23 May 1976 in St Petersburg, Pinellas Co, Fla.
