Hey Barb,
You are absolutely correct. Northeast Alabama didn't have the big plantations and there were many who fought for the Union. I have several who fought for the Confederacy, but I also have at least one on both my maternal and paternal side who were union. On my maternal side, Archibald Horton had a Granddaughter who married the Grandson of a Confederate soldier, Dixon McClendon. On my paternal side, I have a Great Grandmother, Georgia Ann Carver, whose father actually started out Confederate, but ended up union, who married the son of a Confederate soldier, J.T. Maddera. I have four different ancestors, both maternal & paternal in the 49th Alabama, a Confederate unit.
