The family you're referring to in the Dale County and Holmes County census' are in fact that of John Cogdell Hood. He was named for his father Daniel's brother. Cogdell came from his grandmother's maiden name, Mary Cogdell, wife of Bold Robin Hood. There is a lot of info on these lines at www.geocities.com/nchood/BoldRobin.html
I've read somewhere that some descendants thought the C. stood for Crockett because there were several boys in the line whose middle name was Crockett and it was assumed that was what John's C. stood for. His first daughter was named Madona Elizabeth b. 1867. He had many children, one of which the Crockett middle name was used, Johnnie Crockett Hood. His son Charles Dana, also used the middle name for his son David.
John married Mary Elizabeth Sellers in 1865 after serving in the Civil War in the Co. B, 33rd Alabama Infantry. Mary was the daughter of David Sellers and Elizabeth Kinsaul. I have a very crude copy of a handwritten letter from John's father Daniel, written to John while he was serving. I hope to scan it sometime before Spring and get a website up. John served as Justice of the Peace for some time in Holmes County, Fla, and I also have a copy of a hand-written letter he wrote on behalf of his brother Gus (my great great grandfather) to the board of pardons.
You may have already known a lot of this, but I wanted to try and be of some help if possible. Feel free to email at any time.
