Descendants of Milton S. Compton

Generation No. 1

       1. Milton S.2 Compton (Walter D.1)1 was born April 24, 1816 in South Carolina, and died February 20, 1906 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. He married Susan E. Brunson2 September 17, 1852 in Pike County, Alabama, daughter of John Brunson and Elizabeth Davenport. She was born December 29, 1835 in Alabama, and died November 11, 1888 in Crenshaw County, Alabama.

Notes for Susan E. Brunson:
The Brunson Family
http://jenniferhsrn2.homestead.com/pike.html

The Brunson families of Pike county probably are related to the Brunsonís of the other counties in Alabama, as many of the family seems to have migrated west to Alabama from South Carolina in the first half of the 19th century. Two distinct and different families appear in the 1830 census of Pike county and thereafter. David Brunson Jr. and his second cousin, Josiah Brunson, apparently migrated to Clarke County, Alabama in the early 1800ís from South Carolina. Daniel Brunson, (son of Davidís second cousin Josiah), David Brunson Jr., and Davidís son, Josiah Brunson are enumerated in the 1830 census of Pike County. They apparently accompanied the Franklin family from Clarke County to Pike in 1828. The seven children of David Brunson, Jr. and the eight children of Daniel Brunson intermarried with many of their neighbors, including the Capps, Wise, Compton, Benbow, Thomas, and Tisdale families. Many of the descendants still reside in the Crenshaw county area; some have migrated to Texas and Florida.

A letter in the Crenshaw County News, written by one of David Brunsonís grandsons talks about several of the family members, and early residents of Pike/Crenshaw County. Source: Excerpt from ďObits and Abstracts 1910-1919, compiled by Joyce English. Also viewable on her website http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/River/1757/

My grandfather Brunson, and I am not sure but my grandfather Jinkens were with the Surveyors when the State was surveyed out, and I think Arrnett Franklin & Daniel Salter were with the surveyors & they selected the Patsaliga Valley for their future home and when they got through with the survey, then moved from their old home in Sumpter District, S.C. and my grandfather Brunson settled near the edge of the swamp as you come out from the Skaines Bridge toward Mt. Ida. Daniel Salter settled near where Mack Franklin now lives and Barnett Franklin settled up in that neighborhood. The Indians were here then, and they were hundreds of bears, wolves and panthers here at that time. It was very amusing to hear my father tell of bear fights he had been in and on one occasion when a bear scared him so bad, he climbed a slick hickory sapling forty feet high.

My grandfather was first stuck on lands in Clark County on the Tom Bigbee River near Salt Springs, and after a while, he sold out to the Benbows & moved to Clark County. After my father was grown he came back to the Valley & married Elizabeth Jinkins and moved to Montgomery county four miles north of Pine Level. In 1852 he came back to the Valley and settled on the ridge that forms the Patsaliga Bluff that was, when I was five years old Precincts 8 and 9. This county was then an uninhabited territory . At that time Henry Athey and Walter Compton lived in between Mt. Ida and the Patsaliga, and a little lower down lived Daniel Plancy & his sons Job & Daniel then down at the Bluff, lived my uncles Ben and David Brunson, and out from the river were Umphrey Capps and Mr. Holiday, and down in the bend where H.W.Carnes now lives. Uncle V.A.T. Underwood lived.

Those families made up the neighborhood on the river, now in Beat 9 there were one or two panthers seen about the swamp after we came back. There were a lot of deer and turkeys and fish in abundance. We could have lived fat, had we have had guns and ammunition. We had flint and steel guns, but as the old Sister told us last week: We only went to town once in a year and gun flints, shoe pegs and copperas were always first on the bill. The women used copperas in their dye stuff in dying thread to make cloth. My mother and sisters wove a lot of coverletts, counterpanes and four tredel Jeans, etc.

In 1858 Uncle Underwood, sold out to Robert and Thame Hill, and he and father moved way down on Brushey Creek west from where Brantley now is. Our neighbors there were few and far between.

At that time James Holland lived where his son W.G. Holland now lives and W.G.'s grandfather, and uncle John lived at the Holland Bridge on the west side of the river, and on the east side on the hill lived Jacob Taylor, where his grand son E.W.Taylor, now lives. Lower down where H.J. Merrill now lives, lived the older Merrills and down at Dozier were Uncle Daniel Dozier & Uncle Solomon Long and the younger Dozier's and Long's. Then turning north upon double Branch were Steve Branch and Briget Price, where the J.F. Bryan place now is Price owned a large herd of cattle. Over east from Price lived Uncle Bird Sasser and his sons where J.J. Sasser now lives. Further up the Conecuh lived John D. Chapman, Esq., and Green and Hampton Montgomery and William Boswell, father of T.J. Boswell of Beat 12.In 1865 William Turner and William DeLoach bought out the Montgomery's & the Turner's are on the old farm at this time Next in rotation, Crossing over on Dry Creek we found John R.Brunson and Bennett Boyett. Boyett owned a large herd of cattle, Jack Jones east side of the river had a lot of cows. On the west side Conecuh east of Dry Creek were Thomas Wyatt and one Mr.Warren, then coming back we found Green Williamson and Abbie Peterson. This brings us back home. It was an easy thing to raise sheep, hogs goats, and cows here then. My father has a lot of sheep and goats and in 1860 James J. Thurston, N.C. Kirkland, James Brabham and Hugh Cameron, came into Chapel neighborhood. Cameron brought a lot of sheep with him, so you see if, we did not have cattle upon a 1000 hills .we had a 1000 cattle upon hills;

I am now living within a few hundred yards of my father's old settlement where he settled in 1858.so you see I have been here a bit of time. Would like to name old citizens from Mt.Ida to New Providence, but am too lengthy already.

H.D. Brunson

Burial: 1996, Mt. Ida Cemetery, Crenshaw County, Alabama

Notes for Abbie Ruth Nichols:
Abbie Ruth Nichols was the last child born to Alvin C. Nichols and James "Jimmie" Sanders. She was born in the Mount Ida Community of Crenshaw County, Alabama on January 29, 1915. She married William R. Compton, son of Thomas Milton Compton and Caroline Toliver Wood of Crenshaw County on December 03, 1932. William was born in the Spring Hill Community near Mount Ida on September 19, 1909.
After William and Abbie married William farmed for a living. Later he and Abbie opened up a Country Store in the Spring Hill Community. William and Abbie were living in Montgomery, Alabama where William was employed as a building contractor during World War II. Two children were born to this union, the last being born in 1942. Though it is uncertain it is likely they were both born in Crenshaw County. If this should be the case their move would have been in 1942 or later.

From certain indications they may have been living near Dothan in Houston County, Alabama shortly before William retired. After their retirement they returned to the Spring Hill Community where they lived out the rest of their lives. Abbie, like her mother, developed a severe case of arthritis. She died in Crenshaw County on September 07, 1991. William died July 08, 1996. They are buried at the Mount Ida Methodist Church Cemetery in the Mount Ida Community of Crenshaw County.
Two children, a daughter and son, were born to this union.

Notes for Virgie Theresa Compton:
Virgie was the first child born to James Clifford Compton and Clera Clara Nichols, born in the area once known as the Rocky Hill Community in 1910. Rocky Hill is now an area of dense vegetation west of the Spring Hill Baptist Church.
She grew up, almost, on her parent's farm and was married at age 15 to Thomas Edward Hall, son of Aaron Hall and Margarete Brunson. He was born in 1902, eight years the senior of Vergie.

Thomas was raised on his parent's farm in the Bruson Chapel Community, about three miles Northeast of Brantley. In the recollection of the memories of Thomas Compton, Virgie's brother, he states that he can remember when Thomas Hall would come courting, riding a mule or walking the distance from Brunson Chapel to Rocky Hill, a distance of about ten miles. During his earlier years Thomas worked as a sharecropper and traveled a fair amount following the harvest around. He and Virgie settled down on their own farm until later in life when Thomas worked in timber. They lived out the remainder of their lives on Social Security. Up until Tom's death he would still plow his own garden with a mule. He died in 1990. Virgie died during 1998. Seven children were born to Vergie and Thomas.

They are buried in the Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, new section, in the spring Hill Community near Brantley in Crenshaw County, Alabama.

She married Orie "Ob" Lee Sasser204 October 28, 1936 in Crenshaw County, Alabama, son of Jepp Sasser and Lee Turner. He was born February 28, 1907 in Crenshaw County, Alabama, and died October 29, 2002 in Brantley, Crenshaw County, Alabama.

Notes for Mary Eleanior Compton:
My years as a child in Brantley, Alabama are a mixed bag of emotions. There were happy times and not so happy times. There were times I couldn't entertain the thoughts of being gone from there and other times I couldn't bare another day. Regardless of the light that Brantley seemed to shine on me from time to time, a few stand out above the rest. One of the memories I have that evokes that of kindness and goodness is the memories I have of Mary Eleanoir Sasser. This woman certainly radiated in every aspect those qualities.

Mary was a very active member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church near Brantley in the Spring Hill Community. I will always remember the smile on her face and the shine in her eyes as a child in Sunday School. There was no doubt in my mind, even when I was so young, where that glow came from. She was and is a true follower of the Lord. My father died in 1988 and Mary came by to visit the family. The care and kindness she showed that day was the same I remembered from that earlier time.

Sometimes, I wonder how someone can overcome certain tragedies in their lives and remain strong in faith. How is that certain people can continue to have faith when they seem to be a target for heart ache after heart ache? Mary has been no stranger to this pain, having lost two children and a grandchild to horrible accidents. For anyone that knows Mary, they know that she has had, what seems to me, an unfair share of grief and pain. My heart certainly goes out to her, however, I would never have to ask her how it is she finds the strength. I know the answer she would give me. This woman puts her faith and sorrow in the hands of Jesus Christ.

He married (2) Elizabeth Butler November 09, 1973 in Crenshaw County, Alabama, daughter of Robert Butler and Celesta Sanders. She was born Abt. 1925 in Crenshaw County, Alabama.

Notes for Walter Rex Compton:
Walter, known by most as "Rex," was the seventh child born to James Clifford Compton and Clera Nichols. He was born in the area of Crenshaw County west of Brantley that was known as the "Rocky Hill Community" during 1923.

Becoming an accomplished musician in his younger years, Rex hooked up with another local musician a short distance away in Butler County in 1937. This person was Hiram "Hank" Williams of Georgiana. Playing the local Honky Tonks and the local radio stations, Rex had what appeared to be a promising career as an original member of Hanks band known as "The Drifting Cowboys."

In November 1941 the promise of a musical career ended in an auto accident in Montgomery, Alabama at an intersection at Huntington College known as "Five Points." The bandwagon that Rex was driving was slammed in the left side by a speeding vehicle.

The metal rod of the driver's side sun visor sheared and pierced Rex's left temple. Rex never fully recovered and was seriously affected in any attempts for other careers. He managed however to scrape a living throughout his years in Crenshaw County though he was plagued by constant seizures due to that particular injury.

Rex married two times. His first wife was Lillie Shirley from Crenshaw County. They were married in 1948. Two children were born from this union, both girls. This marriage ended in divorce. Rex married again in 1973 to Elizabeth Butler-Dorman, daughter of Robert "Bob" Butler and Celesta Sanders.
