Thomas Finklea of Covington Co., AL
Posted by: Fredreica Speyer Date: November 24, 2001 at 15:44:18

I am interested in finding out more about Thomas Finklea. How is he related to James K. Finklea? Are they related to Thomas Finklea who lived in Monroe County and owned land in Butler County? How does Hugh Finklea fit with these gentlemen? Could my Mary Ellefair A. Finklea descend from one of them? Any thoughts or suggestions on the subject are appreciated! Fredreica Speyer speyer@bellsouth.net

I am looking for the parents of my ancestor, Mary Ellefair (or Elifair or Ellifair or Ellafair or Ellyfair) Ailene (or Adline or Adalaide or Alleice) Finklea (or Finklia or Finkley). She married Thomas G. (possibly Godfrey) Burfitt (or Burfit or Burfet or Burfoot or Barfoot
or Barfelt). I believe they were married in 1850 or before. According to census records, Ellefair was born between 1830 and 1835.

Dallas County Health Dept. shows Ellifair Finklea Burfitt born in Greenville, Butler County, Alabama and Thomas G. Burfitt born in Hartford, CT.

Census states Thomas G. Burfitt and Mary E.A. Finklea Burfitt had 5 children, but only 4 survived. I don't know if the deceased child was born before Mary or after Frank or somewhere in between. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for Thomas G. Burfitt and Mary Ellefair A. Finklea in Lowndes County.

From Marriage Record G., page 411 I have that R. H. Burfitt married Mary E. Grant January 8, 1880, at the residence of James Sharp (his wife was Rebecca Blalock). They were married by F.A. Liles. R.H. Burfitt is Robert H. (could his middle name be Hugh?) Burfitt, son of Thomas G. Burfitt and Ellafair Finklea. He was born 4 Dec 1855 in Benton, Lowndes Co., AL and died 27 Dec 1921. He married Mary Ella Grant at the home of her maternal grandparents.
