epidemic in 1870

Does anyone have a source of information on any epidemics during 1870 in Coosa or Elmore counties? I have an old letter written by an ancestor in 1870 referring to "a great deal of sickness in this area" and have seen other references to it in my research. So far the possibilities include yellow fever, meningitis, small pox, and most likely influenza.
