States: Alabama: Clay
Any records for Clay Co area prior to 1866 are in the courthouse in Talladega, Talladega County. No copies were made for the Ashland courthouse. Remember that the eastern half of Clay Co came from Randolph, which also suffered a devastating courthouse fire, about 1896, I think. So, prior to 1875, there are records for the western half of Clay Co in Talladega. Very few of these records have ever been published and there is nothing online that I am aware of. The early tax records are no longer in the courthouse, but are in a storage facility. If you want to view them, you need to make an appointment beforehand. Some of the tax records are on microfilm in Montgomery, check out the website for the state archives to see what they have. Otherwise, call the courthouse before you make a trip there.
