Decorated veteran Alfred Adams Sr. dies at 80

Lt. Col. Alfred M. Adams Sr., a decorated veteran who served in three wars, died at his Mobile home Saturday. He was 80.
Adams, who joined the Marine Corps in 1942, served in World War II, during which time he earned the first of three Purple Hearts as well as a Bronze Star.
He was discharged from the Marines and was offered a direct commission by the Army. During his stint in the Army, Adams served in the Korean War, earning the Silver Star, a second Bronze Star and two more Purple Hearts. He also served in the Vietnam War.
Pellerree Adams, his wife, described her husband as "loving, friendly, courageous and honorable."
Adams' other military awards include: Legion of Merit, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal with four campaign stars; Meritorious Unit Emblem; World War II Victory Emblem; Army Commendation Medal; Joint Services Commendation Medal; and Army Occupation Medal in Germany and Japan.
He was an active member of the Military Officer's Association and was for many years a deacon at First Baptist Church of Mobile.
Adams, a member of Spring Hill Avenue Baptist Church, was a native of Lower Peach Tree, Ala.
"He is one of the unsung heroes," Pellerree Adams said of her husband.
Adams was proceeded in death by his first wife, Irene Pellitier Adams.
Survivors also include a son, Matt Adams of Birmingham; four stepchildren, Melanie Rucker of Metairie, La., Suzanne Allen of Arlington, Texas, Sharon Lord of San Francisco, Calif., and Thomas Lord of Moore, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Hill Avenue Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway is in charge of the arrangements.
