Is there a record of Stephen Petty's death in Cherokee County, AL.

His wife Nancy May Petty is listed as head of household on 1860 Census for Tippah County, Mississippi. Any knowledge about Stephen appreciated. Why was he listed as an idiot? Was he crazy, any history listed?
