Great! I really think it's worth a trip. It's an easy drive from Atlanta, good roads all the way and interstate or its equivalent as far as Rome GA and a little bit past.
Be sure to ask the librarians about their other genealogical holdings. They have a bunch of stuff on a rolling cart, and some records that they keep off the floor that you have to ask for. At least one of the librarians when I was there several years ago was a keen genealogist herself, and very helpful. The library is directly across the "main drag" from the courthouse, down a side street behind the water tower (you can't miss the water tower).
You also might want to see if you have any Rome connections and make a stop in Floyd County as long as you're in the neighborhood. There was a strong migration pattern of families from East Alabama into Rome. At least four branches of my family from three different Alabama counties (Cherokee, Russell, and Barbour) found their way to Rome. Floyd County's courthouse has NOT burned, and they have lots of old records. Their Probate Court is particularly good, they have even saved all the original wills. My ggg grandfather's will is still tied up in blue ribbon in a little box in the vault. They also have an excellent public library (considerably larger than Centre's but then Rome is a good sized and long-established town) with a lot of regional history and genealogy, including East Alabama because of the strong connection there.
Good luck! I really like the folks in Centre and in Rome, friendly helpful people (of course I'm related to most of them . . . <g> )
