I have been searching for a John Gardner b about 1790 in NC.
He was the son of Jacob Gardner who had 4 children with an Indian woman who was born in 1750's tothe Shawnee Tribe north of the Ohio river.Jacob Gardner was half Scot-Irish and half Catawba Indian. His father was Thomas Brown an Indian Trader with the Catawbas of York Co SC.
His trading post was near Saxe Gothe on the Congaree River
near present day Orangeburg and Columbia SC.
The name was changed from William Brown to Jacob Gardner about 1763 and before 1766.
Why the name was changed is a long story involving the death of the Catawba Chief by 7 Shawnee Warriors on Aug 30 1763.William Brown married a Shawnee woman and after the chief was murdered,he and his "enemy wife"were shunnedby the Catawba tribe.
Jacob Gardner, {who had inherited from his fahter Thomas Browna large inheritance and clamed it Aug 2 1763, as William Brown}owned property in SC, NC and TN between 1766 and 1792.He is listed in Rutherford Co NC 1790 census near present day Henderson Co, Hendersonville.
Listed is one child under the age of 16 (son, John Gardner) and two adults (Jacob b 1729 and son William born 1770.)
Three woman were also in the household.Wife and daughters Nancy Ann and Mary both who married the sons of James Boydstun, who was a Rev War Vet, and worked with Jacob Gardner who served as an Indian Scout for the Americans.
By 1792 Jacob Gardner had sold his 2 pieces of property in SC, 5 in NC and at some time earlier the property in North-eastern TN near the NC and VA state lines.
He then moves with his family to Lincoln County KY.He died in Barren Co KY in 1814.He and sons William and John all owned property by 1801 in Barren/Warren Co KY near Cave City (currently Mammoth Cave National Park area)
William's first wife was Sara possible Riley. She was the mother ofAnnis, Richard and Jacob Riley Gardner. She died before 1814 when William married Eleanor Pawling, born probably to Henry Pawling about 1790.She was a widow first husband's name unk.She gave her 'dower" to William Gardner, meaning she signed over her property to new husband.Eleanor/Elenor and William Gardner had several other chilren,Henry Pawling Gardner b 1814, Jemima and others.Eleanor died before 1840.His next wife was Sally Owen and they had four children,JuliAnn,one other girl and two sons.
John Gardner moved from Barren Co KY before 1820 or shortly thereafter, to TN.I have not been able to locate him in TN.All John Gardners of the era had different parents.
There was another John Gardner, probably unrelated, in Barren Co who married Letty Woods and eventually moved to
Springfield MO.
I find it really interesting you are searching for a John Gardner in GA but born in NC.This possible was the same man as the John Gardner who leftBarren Co.
Please post here if you read this Melissa or anyone else who might have a connection to a John Gardner b in NC lived in Barren Co and moved to another state.
Jacob Gardner/william Brown b in 1729 had a sister I believe named Elizabeth Brown, and married a Tweedie and lived also in Georgia and SC.
