Roger Thornton: Thomas is a recurring name for Thorntons. There is another Thomas A. in Elbert Cty, Ga about the right age, but the ages of children are wrong in the 1840 census. We are looking for the Thomas who had relatives in Jackson Cty, Ga., and a marriage license to Mary Mitchell is recorded there. In the REASON FOR THE TEARS by Bobby Lindsey which includes records of many Thorntons who were patrons of the schools in Chambers County in early 1840's. Our Thomas A. sponsors children Willis and Caroline. But our man disappears from Alabama leaving the children who continue in the school but they are orphans with other sponsors. Does anyone know what newspapers might have news of Chambers County, AL or Georgia in 1840-1845?
