After recently searching the 1850-1910 Butler and Montgomery Co., AL, census records, I am 99% sure that Josiah Tillery, b. 1845 Butler Co., AL, the s/o William Tillery and Rebecca Glass, is "Joseph S. Tillery."
He was listed as "Josiah" on the 1850 Butler Co., AL, census and "J." on the 1860 Butler Co., AL, census record, but from 1870 forward he was listed as "J. S. or Joseph S." He and his family were living 2 doors from his brother, Herbert C. Tillery, when the 1870 Montgomery Co., AL, census was taken. He and his family were living next door to his brother, Herbert C. Tillery, when the 1880 Dead Fall, Butler Co., AL, census was taken. He was on the 1900 Fort Deposit, Lowndes, AL, census and Herbert C. Tillery was in Lowndes Co., AL, also in 1900.
He had 3 children by his 1st wife, Nancy E. McDaniel and they were Cora L., b. 1867, Sally M., b. 1869, and Edwin Hunt Tillery, b. May 1870, d. Jan 1935 Montgomery Co., AL (all were born in Butler Co.). Nancy died before 1874.
Joseph S. Tillery remarried to Ophelia W. MNU (widow of ? Hornaday as Georgia Hornaday was his step-daughter in 1880), b. Oct 1842 AL and d. 8 Mar 1920 Montgomery Co., AL. They had Emmie, b. Jul 1874, Joseph F., b. Feb 1877, d. May 1939 Montgomery Co., AL, Madison, b. 1879, and Nina, b. Jul 1882, Butler Co., AL. I'm not sure where the first 3 children were born, but probably in Butler County also.
Maybe someone has info on Joseph's descendants. His father, William, was an older brother to my g-g-grandmother, Nancy Tillery Rushton. I have Tillery info from SC, AL, AR, & TX that I will share. Thanks, VRB
