I'm only responding because I have a very similar predicament in my family and hit a wall when I tried to find old newspaper accounts. My gg grandfather was called to the door in the middle of the night and murdered around 1845 in either Bibb or Coosa Co. I couldn't find anyone who had an archive of the newspapers of that area and time, but I do remember finding some more recent newspaper archives in the Alabama State Archives in Montgomery. You might find your incident in those files since it was more recent than mine. I also remember from somewhere, there was a Birmingham newspaper that had an archive going back past 1900. You might try there. Wish you luck.
