Dear Jo -It is possible that your James Akin was a son of Lotan (Lotin/Loton) Akin who was born in 1782, married Sarah Mudge in 1805 in Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York, and died in 1854 in Sparta, Crawford Co., Pennsylvania. Among his other children were Aaron H. Akin, b. 1805 in Unidilla, Otsego Co., N.Y., m. Clarissa Chilchester, d. in 1842, Crawford Co., PA; Chauncey (Chancy) Akin, b. 1812 in N.Y., m. Lana Golden in Nebraska in 1836; and Andrew Akin - no information on him.
Evidently Lotan had a namesake, probably a grandson, by the name of Lotan L. Akin, who served as a musician in the New York and Illinois Infantries during the Civil War.
Several members of the Clan Akins Society are descended from this branch of the Clan, one of whom traces the lineage back to a Thomas Akin in 1688. If you would like more information, I would invite you to join the Clan Akins Society & receive our quarterly newsletter as well as our membership directory so you can get in touch with other individuals working on this line.
We are glad to hear from you and hope that you will want to become an active member of the Clan.
