Mitchell Akin (1814-1878) of Illinois

Hi,
I'm a descendant of Mitchell Akin of Franklin County IL and later of Jackson County IL. He was born 1814, probably in Giles, Tennessee and died 1878 in Jackson County IL. He was married first to Mary (prob. Hart) and then to Minerva Browning.

I've been trying to find some record of his parents names; lots of online family trees list his parents as James "Knobby Jim" and Catherine (McLean) Akin of Franklin Co. IL, but I can't find any actual records or evidence of the link. In fact, as far as I can tell James Akin never lived in Tennessee, which is listed as Mitchell's place of birth in the census records. So does anyone know who his parents really were or where I could look for evidence?

Libby
