Help needed for info on death of HUGHES circa 1905

I'm trying to track down info on Hedley (Headley) Vicars (Vickers) Hughes (Hughs) who is supposed to have died in a shipwreck off the Alaska coast around 1903 - 1915. He was a master mariner, so may have been captain or mate of the ship. As far as we know, he was not associated with the Princess Sophia, but according to family legend, the shipwreck was prominently covered in the newspapers. He was a native of Victoria, British Columbia. Any help on how to go further with this search would be appreciated. Unfortunately, without a date of death, the Alaska Shipwrecks site doesn't help much, and the Vital Stats can't search for his death certificate.
Thanks.
