Kennicott Glacier was named for Robert Kennicott, pioneer Alaska explorer and director of the scientific corps of the Wetsern Union Telegraph Expedition in 1865. The town of Kennecott (mispelled) was established in 1908 near the Kennecott Mines Company diggings on the Copper River. It is now part of Wrangell/St. Elias national Park.
