Reindeer herding in Alaska

I have been trying to find information on the group of men hired by the US gov. to go to Alaska and train the native people on herding reindeer, and I have hit dead end after dead end. My relative Louis Karbum died while up there(around 1908), and his family was sent back to Republic, MI. Would love to find some sort of documentation.
