Right now there is only one newspaper in Anchorage, the Anchorage Daily News ( Their online archives only dates back to 1985, but the newspaper itself has been publishing in Anchorage in 1946. They went from a weekly format to six days in 1948. It might be worth your time to contact the newspaper and inquire about articles from 1953.

Wasilla is located about an hour north of Anchorage, and a newspaper called the "Frontiersman" has been published since 1947. They can be found at You might try contacting them.
