Peter A Byron was born Sept 11, 1812 in Queensferry, Scotland. His father died in the battle of Waterloo in 1815, leaving his wife and two small children; Peter age three, and Barbara age one year. Their mother later married George McDougal, and had two children, George Jr. and Elizabeth.
Peter was put to live with three old aunts, and was not treated very kindly, so he ran away at the age of fourteen, and went on a whaling vessel to the Artic Circle and Alaska. He was gone five years, so was nineteen when he returned to Scotland.
He then took up ship carpentry, which took four to six years (author's memory not certain). He continued working at this trade, and on Sept 16, 1839, married Janet Allison.
They came to America in 1848 with their children, Peter Jr., Jeanette, Robert and Alexander, in a sailing vessel and were three months making the trip. As he was a ship carpenter, he worked his way across the ocean.
They lived in Buffalo, NY, where William was born July 13, 1849; and where Alexander and William died of Cholera. They came to MI in 1850.
