WIFE- BATTERING DEFENSE REJECTED
A Superior Court jury rejected a battered-wife defense Friday night when convicting Elizabeth Halberg of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband.
Walter Halberg, 57, was stabbed in the heart a year ago.
Defense lawyers said Mrs. Halberg was the victim of an abusive relationship where she was trapped in a repeated cycle of violence.
But prosecutors say the 31-year-old woman displayed no signs of injury or abuse.
Dismissal of those grounds would be "a bastardization of a legitimate phenonemon," said Louis Menendez, who had sought a first-degree murder conviction.
Sentencing is scheduled for April.
There is another article dated 3/7/1988- synopsis-
Walter Henry Halberg, resident since 1976, pled guilty to Alaska Dividend Fraud. 90 days in jail, 86 days suspended, fined $1,234 and 40 hours community service. He applied for dividends under his own name and the name of Henry Jackson. He must pay back the dividends under his name and the alias for a total of $4,850 and will be barred from all Fund dividends. The state was alerted to this from a tip.
