Hi again, and thanks for the information. Many questions to ask, but I don't know how to reach you by e.mail. The web site shows your e,mail as 'HIDDEN' I would love to contact you direct if it can be arranged.
A couple of other things, My Grandmother, Minnie, had one sister that I know of, Mary, who went to America in her early years. I visited her in 1979 and met members of her family, one of whom we stayed with. This was Alice Barr, and she lived in Henniker, New Hampshire, and she had children in that area. There was another couple, 'Mary and George', can't recall the surname so I don't know which one was Mary's child, but they lived in Massapequa, Long Island. I suspect that Mary was her daughter. Auntie Mary, Minnie's sister, lived with her son, also on Long Island, can't recall the son's name I'm afraid, but my (now) ex-wife tells me that he won the Golden Gloves boxing competition in USA.
Grandad, George, was shot in WW1 and his life was saved by a German Doctor. He was in Cottbus prison camp and I have some postcard pictures of that place which he gave me. I am sure that somewhere I have pictures of Minnie too.
You are correct in George's occupation. If you blew it, he could play it ! He played bassoon in the Bradford Police Band throughout his service there.
I have no information on his parents and would be thrilled to learn more about them if it is possible.
It is interesting to note that his father was called James, our son is too. Our daughter, Sarah, also has the Aird name in her Christian names, at George's request. He was an old man when she was born and didn't know if we would have a son at that time. He was insistent that the name would be carried on, and I hope that it now will be.
Incidentally, Sarah has inherited her great grandmothers hair colouring. Minnie's was fiery red before age turned it into a more gentle auburn, with a few grey bits !
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Alan Coper
