Dear Jack,
This is a wonderful coincidence. I came across this site purely by chance, as I was explaining to my daughter the reason she has 'Aird' in her Christian names. I went on the net and typed in 'Aird, Scotland', and there was your entry.
Amazing !
I am the grandson of George Edward Cooper and his wife, Marion Nee Aird.
They indeed were married in Galston and lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
My father was James Cooper, (Jim) their eldest son, and his brother was William (Bill).
Sadly, all have now passed on, George survived until his 96th year, but my dad, Jim, pre-deceased him when he was two days short of his 65th birthday. Bill also died a few years ago, aged in his 80's, but his wife , Edith, survives him. They had no children.
Both Jim and Bill served in the Bradford City Police,
as did I. My dad ended his career as a detective sergeant, and was a Coroner's Officer in his last years of service. Spookily, that is the job I now hold, and am proud to follow in his footsteps.
I would love to know more of your interest in my family, and would be happy to discuss things with you. For instance, do you have any background on my grandfather, George ? I know that he was born in Portsmouth and was in an orphanage there for a while, but I know little else of his life there. He had a sister, Mabel, also now gone, and she had several children, Mary and Douglas I know. I think Douglas is still around and lives in London somewhere.
The reason that they lived in Bradford was as follows... they measured the distance between Portsmouth and Galston, and guess what is about halfway !
I am going on holiday today for a week, but I will check my e.mails on my return, and look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Alan Cooper.
