Nobody has found the evidence yet to answer this question with any certainty. I have a hypothesis but no proof that Thomas and his brothers, Levin, James, William, Joseph, and Elias who all settled in AL in the early 1800's were the sons of Levin Sr.'s brother, William Jr. Let me explain my reasoning and please feel free to tell me if it is faulty.
There is land record evidence that Levin Sr. & William Jr. were together in Moore Co., NC in the late 1600's and possibly went to SC about the same time while their other brother, James Patterson Ainsworth stayed in Burke Co., NC. The Ainsworth brothers who settled in AL did appear to come out of SC. We know that Thomas was in the Spartanburg District of SC at least until 1810. The Levin Jr. and William who left Chesterfield Co., SC and settled at least for 10 years in Christian Co., KY appear to have been sons of Levin Sr. considering the use of the term Jr. on the census record. It is highly unlikely that Levin Sr. would have had two sons named Levin but it is highly probable that his brothers would have named sons after him. Since Thomas and the Alabama Levin are believed to be brothers, I believe that they are sons of either William Jr. or James Patterson. Maybe one day we will find some evidence that will give us a definitive answer. More and more old records are becoming available all the time.
