* My great-grandfather. An article in the local newspaper reports an interesting occurrence before Clarence is born. His mother, and sisters decide to board a steamer The Lady Woodsum , however, it¡¦s boiler bursts, and the ship goes down ,luckily hitting an underwater shelf of Rock. Walter Ainsworth is out fishing with a couple of friends when on hearing of the disaster rows frantically for the boat in the hope of saving his wife from drowning.
All passengers on board survive except for Clarence Woodsum who was badly scalded from the boiler, but refused to leave the ship til all passengers were unloaded to safety.
A piece of the ship is taken as a momento and the date and of the names of the familiy members are written on it, which I currently have, and my parents have the newspaper article. When Clarence is born he is named after the fellow that died.
