Glenda - there is one family in Birkenhead, CHS in the 1881 who seem to fit the bill:
William AINSLIE       M       44        M       Northumberland, England       Rel:       Head       Occ:       Iron Moulder
Mary AINSLIE       M       38        F       Ireland       Rel:       Wife       Occ:       Dressmaker
Edith AINSLIE               15        F       Birkenhead       Rel:       Daur       Occ:       Dom Serv
Rachail GWYNNE (AINSLIE)               8        F       Birkenhead       Rel:       Step Daur       Occ:       Scholar
Joseph GWYNNE (AINSLIE)               6        M       Birkenhead       Rel:       Step Son       Occ:       Scholar
John GWYNNE (AINSLIE)               2        M       Birkenhead       Rel:       Step Son

looking at this, it would imply that William married twice, latterly to a widow Mary GWYNNE (maiden name unknown). are ther any clues in the photograph that might indicate class or background? An iron Moulder was definitely working class, and one would expect to see indications of that - although Edith may have married well and moved up the ladder!

he may or may not be on my database: I'd need to do more work to be sure - but he probably comes from the group of AINSLIE's who were descended from the Lasswade clan, some of whom moved south into NBL.

Please mail me with any other details you may have, including descendants - I keep track of the distaff lines as well as the males descendants - and if by any chance you have a scan of the photo, I'd be very interested to see it!

Hugh Ainsley - the AINSLEY one name study.
