My wife's ancestor, Sophia/Sophie Amon (born 20 Jul 1849 in PA), may be a Zilphee/Zeyphee Aiman, born in 1849, daughter of Samuel H(ouston) Aiman and Ellen, in Montgomery county, PA, probably in White Marsh. Samuel Aiman is very likely the son of John Aiman (1795), who is, I believe, the son of George Aiman (b. 1750), son of Johann Georg Ehemann who immigrated from Germany.
Samuel and Arnold Aiman are living close together in Springfield, Montgomery, PA in 1840. This Samuel Aiman appears to replace John Aiman, who is listed in Springfield in 1830. Presumably, this John Aiman and Arnold are brothers. John must have died in Springfield sometime between 1830 and 1840. It appears John had at least three male children: Samuel, Edwin and Charles and probably several other children not yet identified.
Samuel and wife, Ellen, were living in White Marsh, Montgomery, Pa in 1850. He died, presumably in White Marsh, sometime between the birth of his last child in 1855 and 1860. Samuel and Ellen named one of their two sons, John, not Arnold, which further suggests John is Samuel's father. After his death, according to the 1860 census, his wife, Ellen, was living with her children back in Springfield. By 1870 she had moved to Philadelphia. By 1880, she is shown living with her son, Samuel H(ouston) Aiman, in Philadelphia.
"Sophie" Amon/Ammon/Ahman/Aiman/etc. does not show up in any census prior to her marriage in 1872 in Kansas to Jacob B Mundorff of Conestoga, Lancaster, PA. Sophie always said in the censuses from 1880 on, that her parents were German. Although this Aiman line was born in PA for several generations, perhaps she was refering to their ethnic origins.
I can imagine she might have changed her name from Zilphee/ZeyPhee to Sophie when she married, after she left her German environment for Kansas. If she were actually Zilphee prior to her marriage, this might explain why "Sophie/Sophia/Sofie/Sophia/etc." does not show up in any census for anywhere in the whole USA from 1850-1870. This, together with her birth year being 1849 and the fact that Zilphee is last listed with her family in 1870 (Sophie was in Kansas in 1880), and that Sophie is a close phonetic spelling to Zilphee/Zeyphee, are all consistent with this possibility.
Of course, I haven't yet proven that my wife's Sophie Amon is, in fact, Zilphee Aiman, but this appears to be a reasonable postulation to pursue, especially given that there do not seem to be any other possible candidates.
Can anyone help me prove or disprove this theory?
