The book "Eminent Arbroathians" [Arbroath, Scotland]by McBain, tells of the tradition that the originator of the Aikman name was the officer in MacDuff's Army who ordered the soldiers to camouflage themselves with oak branches. They were encamped at Birnam Wood and attacking McBeth at Dunsinine Castle. The success of the maneuver earned the officer the "Oakman" or "Aikman" (Aik meaning Oak) and Malcome Canmore III, in this year of 1057, replaced MacBeth as King of Scotland.
John Aikman, of Cairne (the Aikman homestead near Arbroath, County Forfarshire (now Angus) on Scotland's east coast, just north of the First of Tay) registered between 1672-78 the Aikman Coat of Arms. The Aikman motto is: "Sub-robore virtus" which means "Valor Under the Oak" - referring to the advance on Dunsinane Castle.
The Aikman families, per McBAin, are to be found in Forfarshire, Lanarkshire, and in the Stewrdtry of Kirkudbright. Alysandre de Aikman, of Lanarkshire, swore fealty to King Edward 1st in 1296. The Aikmans of Arbroath are traced as far back as 1505.
There are many family legends about the Aikmans of Scotland and their roles in the formation of Scotland's history. There was the free Baron Alysandre de Aikman of Lanarkshire who was complelled to swear loyalty to King Edward. James Aikman sat in Parliament in 1473 and again in 1505. One John Aikman was a Judge for civil cases in 1566. On 15 July 1661 another John Aikman obtained the charter under the great seal for lands at Cairnie in Arborath from his father, George Aikman, who had acquired them several years earlier. Ten John Aikmans are buried in Arbroath Abbey.
I have never learned what ship any of the Aikmans came to America on. I do know that Alexander originally settled on the Passaic River in Somerset Co. NJ. then moved to newly formed Morris Co. later. All of us, Aikman descendants, would really like to determine who the parents of John and Alexander were- hopefully one day we'll get that information.
