This starts to get complicated, but, let's begin with a fact:
Morgan County, OH, Probate Court, Marriage Records, 1819-1923,
Marriage Records, v A-C 1819-1860, LDS Film #910657, pg 95, 1 Feb 1826.
"397 Israel Aikins and Eliza Oliver
The State of Ohio, Morgan County
I hereby certify that on the 6th day of November last I joined together
in the holy state of matrimony Israel Aikins and Eliza Oliver. Given
under my hand and seal this 1st of Feby. 1826
John White JP {seal}."
Subsequently, Eliza married James Wells, 26 Aug 1839, Athens, Ohio -- info from IGI and supported by a letter found in Ichabod's Civil War pension file, which W F Wells wrote stating that he was a half-brother to Ichabod Aikins, that they had the same mother. Mr Wells states that they were raised together and that his step-brother Albert was not blood relation.
Eliza was James' second wife -- his first wife was Esther Decker.
I have not yet found the marriage license for Israel and Sohia, probably in Hamilton County, OH, but there are a number of reports of this marriage among Baits/Bates family researchers, such as Pedigree Resource File CD #38, Baits & Jewett Families, Submitted 9 Jul 1996 by: Dayna (Colley) Linton <uhdayna at cableone dot net>, 4931 Rebecca Drive, Chubbuck, ID, 83202. Sophia Baits, who married Israel Aikins, is the 3rd great grand aunt of Dayna's husband. Unfortunately Dayna has not replied to e-mail, postal, nor phone messages. Likewise, Ren Lallatin seems to have disappeared.

Thanks so much for your post. It got me to working on this line of the family again. All I know about Sophia is she was the daughter of Daniel Baits and Hannah Jewett. She was born 27 May 1808 in NY. She married 24 Jan 1828 Israel Atkins. I have no information on him. And She died 19 Jan 1876 Vandalia, Fayette Co., IL .
In the 1850 census and subsequently, Israel's wife is identified as Sophia born in NY:
1850 US Census, IL, Fayette County, ancestry.com, viewed 14 May 2005, pg 342, ln 22-32, 31 Oct 1850. "

And, there are two men, both with the unusual name of Ichabod Aikins, both with evidence that Israel is their father, both Civil War veterans, and both buried in Kansas, the younger in St Paul, Neosho, KS, and the elder in Holton Cemetery, Holton, Jackson, KS
Since you are familiar with the younger Ichabod, you might be interested in his half-brother:
Ichabod I Aikins (the elder) was born 7 Aug 1826 in Marion County, OH. He died 10 Oct 1916 in Montgomery County, KS and was buried in Holton Cemetery, Holton, Jackson, KS.
Ichabod was counted in the US Census 7 Aug 1860 in Pond Creek PO, Jackson, VA, later WV. He was counted in the US Census 1 Jun 1870 in Walnut Creek Twp, Hiawatha PO, Brown, KS.
Ichabod married (1) Charlotte White, daughter of James White and Mary Polly Coleman, on 28 Feb 1850 in Jackson County, VA. Charlotte was born 5 Jul 1825 in Pond Creek, Grant Twp, Jackson, VA, later WV. She died 7 Aug 1855 and was buried in Murraysville Cemetery, Jackson County, WV.
They had the following children:
i. Mary Aikins was born estimated 1851. She died 1858-1860 ??.
ii. Frances E Aikins was born about Jul 1852. She died 10 Jun 1853 and was buried in Murraysville Cemetery, Jackson County, WV.
iii. Alice Aikins was born estimated 1853. She died 1858-1860 ??.
iv. Violet Aikins was born estimated 1854 in WV.
Ichabod also married (2) Sarah Lent, daughter of Abraham Lent and Mary Ann Buckley, on 13 Mar 1856 in Jackson County, WV. Sarah was born about 1834.
They had the following children:
v. Amadeus (Amsden?) Aikins was born about 1857 in WV.
vi. Alfred (Alpha?) Aikins was born about 1859 in WV.
vii. Alma Aikins was born about 1860 in WV.
viii. Asher Aikins was born 9 Apr 1861 in WV.
Asher married Rosa Aumiller.
ix. Ann Aikins was born about 1867 in OH.
x. Ardelize Aikins was born 1869 in KS.
xi. Averill Aikins was born Apr 1870 in prob Walnut Creek Twp, Brown, KS.
