Starting a new thread to get away from Barb. What do you know about William Holland Thomas? Someone posted that his first wife was from Burke County NC, Is this true? Many Burke County marriages don't exist. Reason Im asking is I think William Holland Thomas knew Conrad Hildebrand Jr and Samuel Finley Patterson (Indian Commissioner to the Cherokee). All three of them are around the same age. Samuel Finley Patterson was in charge of selling Cherokee land in Macon County NC. William Holland Thomas is at the land sale buying up land he later gives to the Cherokee. This was a cash sale so the money WH Thomas used to buy up the land there would be no record of today. S F Patterson had a lot of money, he was married to the granddaughter of William Lenoir who was also a big wig court official. I do wonder if SF Patterson was backing WH Thomas financially. The Burke County NC land deeds all taken by the court officials who happen to be related to the Cherokee. Could they have sent W H Thomas in to save the Cherokee land when Burke County land records go missing????? I have ancestors loose their land around removal but at the moment no reason why only they fall off the tax records in the 1830's. By early 1840's we have no land.
Also was W H Thomas the only person who gave the Eastern Band land? Reason Im asking is I see William Waugh was at the Cherokee land sale in Macon. William Waugh was from Wilkes County NC , has ties to the Gilreaths (married Eastern Band). The Gilreaths have close ties to the Fletchers, Ussery and William Lenoir.
Thanks for any input.
