The Cherokee language is Iroquoian, and legend has it that the people now called the Cherokee, were once a Southern branch of the Iroquois Nation, and that they lived in what is now lower NY and Northern PA, breaking off about 1400+ AD, and migrating south, along the Appalachians. (See: Original Extent of Cherokee Land Claims.) Whether the Cherokee were driven off, or they moved on their own, is unknown, I believe. At least, I have seen nothing so far, which indicates either way.
