Shawnee mitochondrial DNA and autosomal DNA of Nancy Ford O’Bryant
Nancy Elizabeth Shaw Ford O’Bryant was born in Ohio in 1807. She was Shawnee, was adopted by the Benjamin and Mary Apriorson Ford family, and in 1823 married Alfred O’Bryant (part Choctaw). Nancy’s particulars appear on trees at Ancestry.com. I believe that there might be several persons alive today who bear Nancy’s mitochondrial DNA haplogroup, as she has a large number of descendants. Mitochondrial DNA is passed down through the female line, i.e. via a woman’s daughter’s daughter’s daughter, etc.Examples of Nancy’s descendants which might have continued to pass Nancy’s mtDNA down through daughters include: Malinda O’Bryant Totten (b. 1825); Anna Starr Cowan (b. 1871); Mary Ann O’Bryant Stites (b. 1831); & Martha Ellen Stites (b. 1850). I would be happy to advise anyone who thinks that they might be an appropriate descendant of Nancy, and who wishes to pursue mtDNA testing. Full Sequence mtDNA should be tested, that is all 3 segments of the mtDNA circle.

Nancy’s autosomal DNA would have been passed down though either sex. All descendants of Nancy would show up as having Native American ancestry on these tests, called Family Finder tests by www.familytreedna.comOn such a test, Nancy’s Shawnee genetics would summate with the Choctaw ancestry of Nancy’s husband’s mother in the production of a final percentage of one’s Indian ancestry. Descendants of Jesse and Anna O’Bryant Retherford carry autosomal DNA from Nancy Ford and Alfred O’Bryant.
