I just googled on the web a little. I read some webs that claim the French were near Maine before the English arrived in Plymouth. I agree with Juanita it kind of sounds French but given that area and the time frame could also be possibly Indian. Your ancestors may have even witnessed the mayflower. This area was known for English Puritans. It's possible you have an English ancestor that took an Indian wife. They did baptize Indians. I would try googling Plymouth Mass. There are a bunch of webs. Maybe you might find a historian in the area to help you.
