jodi, thanks for trying to help.I guess i was trying to help you.: )
Charlie Chambers is not my ancestor, he was the first man (Cherokee) my gggggrandmother Lydia Burns was married to.There may or may not have been marriage records for them because they resided with the Cherokee and may well have gone by tribal, rather than White, traditions.I don't know.Charlie and the daughters are on the 1851 roll, which seems to indicate that Charlie was related to Old Settler families. It IS possible that Lydia's father was an 'intruder' in the West, and she met and married Charlie there. At the end of it, Charlie and their two daughters died during the cholera epidemic that went through the CNW in 1867-1868.Lydia Chambers (nee Burns) then married a Hood, son of Sunday (James) Downing.Sunday Downing (my Hood's father) and wife Polly are living in CNE in 1835 and are on some pre-muster papers.
My REAL focus is on Lydia Burns, daughter of Aleck Burns, who was listed as being NC on some of the papers I've seen.Others indicate TN.By all accounts, she was White, and married into the Cherokee - making them one of the only ~20% of White Woman/Indian Male marriages...I'd love to know who her family is...and I'm having a very tough time with it.The Hicks genealogy called her Lydia Thorne, based on one Eastern App- I believe there was a 'transciption error' in that app.
I have been in contact with the descedents of Aleck Burns from NC, and we can't make a connection between my Lyddy and their Aleck. So I'm still hunting.Your information gives me a feeling for different things to look at, relative to Burns.I'm always on the lookout for info on trader liscenses, delegates and interactions with the Cherokee to see if that name ever appears.if you ever see anything like that, I'd appreciate the heads-up.
thanks
juanita
