Fishers among the Browns, Blackburns & Rices
Several of my ancestors on my mother's side of the family have used the Fisher name, either as a first, middle or last name through & including my great X 7 grandfather Robert Fisher/Brown Sr. [b. 1759, Culpeper Co., VA.]. On his Guion Miller application, [page 6] my ancestor James Jackson Blackburn [b. 1844, GA.] states, "My mother was the granddaughter of Robert Fisher, who was a full blood Cherokee Indian."
On the application, James J. Blackburn lists his Indian name: James Jackson Fisher. He claims his Cherokee blood through his great grandfather Robert Fisher. James goes on to list his mother's English name: Fannie Blackburn
Mother's Indian name: Fannnie Fisher
Mother's maiden name: Fannie Brown
James states his mother was born in Franklin Co., GA. He lists his brothers and sisters as William Blackburn [b. 12-7-1841]. Tildy Jane Blackburn [b. 4-5-1845], Annie Blackburn [b. 9-5-1751 & d. 7-4-1881] and Evaline Rice [b. 7-3-1850 & d. 9-20-1881].
Grandparents [father's side]: Allen Blackburn
Grandparents [mother's side]: Peggy Brown, Indian name: Peggy Fisher
Aunts and uncles [mother's side]: Jennie Brown, Indian name: Jennie Fisher
English name Matilda Brown
Indian name: Matilda Fisher
It would appear, as Jamezs J. Blackburn states, the Cherokee came from his mother's side of the family, the Fisher/Brown side.
Any clues, hints or help on when, where & why the Fisher name first became associated with these Browns, Rices and Blackburns would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Marshall
