Many mixed-blood Cherokee/White families repopulated the abandoned Creek town of Weogufka, Coosa Co., Alabama, in 1835. They started out at Head of Coosa (River) near Rome, GA, and it took them months to travel in relative secrecy along the Coosa, arriving just west of Weogufka. Many descendants of these people are enrolled in the State registered, Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama. Some are relatives of mine, and a man named Howard White was at one time the Chief of the tribe. He has posted several years ago on Genforum, and you may be able to get some info by reading some of his material. He may be on this board, and he has posted on the Blankenship and Epperson surname forums as well. Today, Weogufka is just a crossroads, with a Post Office, Garage and Gas Station, and the "Old South" general store, complete with a Confederate flag. Most everyone has moved on, many, many years ago.
