In my family papers, there is an obituary that begins:"Mr. and Mrs. Lewis of this city, met with a severe and heart rendering loss, in the death of their four and only daughters, but a short time ago they arrived here from the Cherokee Nation, where they had resided for several years."
This is my GGG-Grandparents.William Henry Lewis b. 08/03/1842 in MO and his wife, Mary Adeline Anderson Lewis b. 10/22/1841 in Indiana.
My Great-Aunt said that Mary A. Anderson Lewis was Cherokee and adopted into the Anderson family. My Grandmother (who was oldest) had never heard of it.I can't find anything on Mary Anderson except that her mother's name was Cloe Lansford b. about 1815 in Indiana and died about 1846 in Indiana. All of Cloe's children are born two years apart and I'm of the opinion that probably the adoption thing was a figment of my Great-Aunts imagination.
I know that they left Missouri and were in Oklahoma in 1889 and were living in Pawhuska, OK when they left in 1899 to homestead in Wyoming.
The little girls all died of the measles within a month of each other in May of 1885.
I know that Pawhuska in on the Osage Reservation, but I don't know if they were living there as interlopers or if there was an acceptance of Mary as belonging. But did the Osage accept Cherokee? Was Mary really Cherokee?
In my quest for all of these answers, my most immediate question is,where was Cherokee Territory in relation to Pawhuska.I would like to find the graves of these four little girls. It make sense to me that they would be in Pawhuska, but I haven't been able to get any information.
