Charles Pinkney Barrett on Indian rolls WHY???

Going thru last summer and found ggg grandfather Charles Pinkney Barrett born 1816 or 1817 somewhere in southwestern South Carolina and died in Leon Co, Texas in 1865.

Found him quite by accident on an "Indian roll"

He was NOT an Indian!

His WIFE said to be at least half Native American and believed to be Cherokee Lucinda Parthena Phillips was her name. Born 1816 or 1817 somewhere in Georgia and father said to be the Indian and mom said to be Mary Ann BROWN?

Lucinda NOT on the roll at all.

Cannot , of course recall the document with C P listed but recall I could not access it at the time...

Anyone have any idea what's going on?
