Researching Native American ancestry shouldn't be any different than researching any ancestry. You start with yourself and go back generation by generation, and you may or may not find Native ancestry.
One thing I have noticed over and over on this forum, is that just because a long ago ancestor might have been Native American, that means the descendant is one.I doubt that many tribes would recognize and allow tribal membership just because gg granny was native American. In other words your ancestry may include Native American, but you are not Indian.Just as some of my ancestors were Irish, I am not Irish
And as far as having an ancestor that "looked Indian", I wish someone would define that, since that "look" certainly runs the gamut, just as it does for any other ethic group. The members of the tribes in this area, certainly don't all look like the movie version of what we thing Native Americans should look like.
