The name Ocief
I am searching for information on what Tribe the name Ocief may be associated with. My 4th Grt Grandparents were John Redd and a Native American woman named Ocief from the Old Windsor, S.C. area. Their daughter Elizabeth Narcissa Redd married my 3rd Grt Grandfather James Michael Kaney in the Augusta, Georgia area. Recently myself and some cousin's have uncovered that there was a band of Chickasaw Indians that lived in the area called the Savannah River Chickasaw in the late 1700's. In addition, we have found that the Kaney surname is listed in the Chickasaw Nation and there are records of many Kaneys on the Dawes Rolls. We had thought that maybe Ocief came from this band of Chickasaw living in this area. But, then we started looking at Ocief's name and the spelling of her name and comparing it to the Chickasaw and Muscogee Creek language. Then what we found is that the Chickasaw does not have the vowel "e" in their language so we started looking at the Muscogee Creek language and we found a pronunciation and spelling guide online and we compared it to many early Creek names and we think we have found a connection. In addition, we also found the surname Red in the Creek Rolls and plus, the name Ka ney listed also. The guide online does not have much but we very strongly believe now that she was Creek. We also believe that the spelling and pronunciation of her name is an English version. What we wanted to ask is, with the spelling of her name we believe that she is connected to a Muscogee related tribe but, we are not certain. We have been searching for this for sometime and have been unable to find any definite answers. Any help anyone can give us on this, we would be very thankful. Thanks, Gavin
