Rosemary,
Here is a possible snapshot of your grandmother's familyfrom the 1910 Federal census.
1910 Taos county - 31 households of "Lujan"s:
21 of those households were Taos Pueblo Indians. No other Indian nation identified
as being present in the county & enumerated on Federal cenus. The Jicarilla Apache
Nation's headquarters in Dulce, NW, is about 80 - 100 miles northwest of Taos Pueblo.
The Apache & the Pueblo peoples were not historically friends, although it happened in
history (1700's & 1800's) that they found themselves on the same side fighting against
the Mexican/Spanish invaders - all the way back to the 1600's at least.
1910 - NEW MEXICO, TAOS county, LOS CORDOVAS, Page: 25B, enum'd 14 Apr 1910
note: "white" includes Spanish or Mexican, but not Indian.
This is the only Lujan household in the 1910 census which has an Amelia in it.
Tobias Lujan, head, white, 39, marr'd 1, 14 yrs, , NM/NM/NM
Ceria M., wife, wife, 31, m'd 1, 14 yrs, 7 ch borne/5 still lvg, NM/NM/NM
Pablo M., son, white, 9, , NM/NM/NM
Arturo, son, white, 6, NM/NM/NM
Piedad, dau, white, 4, , NM/NM/NM
Antonia, dau, white, 2, NM/NM/NM
Amelia, dau, white, 7/12, NM/NM/NM
Everyone enumerated as "Indian" in Taos county in 1910, was also enumerated as Taos Pueblo
Indian, and not a single Apache was enumerated by that name.
good luck in your search.Since it seems this family had been in NM for a while, you are likely to be
able to find them in the 1900, and maybe even the 1880 census. If you don't have a local library or
online access to census data, drop me a note, and I'll look further
