1870 Kiowa Raid in or near Leon County TX
Hi,
I am trying to find some type of documentation of a Kiowa Indian attack on Matthew D. Scarborough of Leon County Texas. This incident occurred in 1870, according to Scarborough's son, who wrote a history of it in the early 1900s. Reportedly, Scarborough left his home in Leon County in 1870 on the way to buy supplies in town (don't know which town). A band of Kiowas attacked and scalped him, and then left. Scarborough survived and lived another ten years.
Does anyone have suggestions for how I can verify the accuracy of this incident? Did the Kiowas raid as far southeast as Leon County in 1870? Is there the possibility of a newspaper article about the attack?
Thanks,
Tim Hudson
